In the archaeological site of Riparo Dalmeri (Trentino, Italy), renowed for its painted stones, a large number of haematite based red ochre specimens of different shades have been found, occasionally in burnt contexts of the site (Dalmeri et al. 2000, Dalmeri et al. 2005). The present study aims at developing an archaeometric approach to differentiate natural ochre lumps from those artificially obtained by heating goethite nodules. In this regard, the main crystallographic and microstructural features of haematite, sensitive to its origin, have been identified.

Abstract

In the archaeological site of Riparo Dalmeri (Trentino, Italy), renowed for its painted stones, a large number of haematite based red ochre specimens of different shades have been found, occasionally in burnt contexts of the site (Dalmeri et al. 2000, Dalmeri et al. 2005). The present study aims at developing an archaeometric approach to differentiate natural ochre lumps from those artificially obtained by heating goethite nodules. In this regard, the main crystallographic and microstructural features of haematite, sensitive to its origin, have been identified.
